Culture Club – Sir Grayson Perry: How he became a National Treasure

Thursday 5th September, 19:00-20:30

Join us for our inaugural Dorset Museum and Art Gallery Culture Club event!

This month, we’re joined by Art and Design Historian Pam Simpson MA to explore how Grayson Perry became a National Treasure.

Perry came to prominence when he won the Turner Prize in 2003. Far from being an overnight success, it took him decades to become the household name we recognise today. He described becoming an artist as akin to ‘climbing Everest without oxygen’.

In this talk, Pam Simpson will explore Perry’s journey from Essex beginnings to international acclaim, and celebrate his unique work – spanning ceramics, tapestry, drawing, sculpture and architecture – which communicates very directly with the viewer and contains subject matter that is thought provoking and often poignant.

Doors open 18:45, and the talk will begin at 19:00.

Pam Simpson MA is a professional Art and Design historian, who has taught in London art colleges for 35 years, 20 years at Middlesex University, where she ran a department. She has also taught at Bath Spa University. Simpson is currently Associate Lecturer at University of the Arts London. She is an enthusiastic lecturer who loves her subject and conveying her knowledge to others. She has also been teaching Art and Design History courses in Bridport and on line in recent years and lives in West Dorset.
